Let's Talk About How You Feel...
Was today a stressful day at work? Maybe you've had a busy day with the kids and now you're ready to just kick back, feet up, glass of wine and it's time to relax. Perhaps today was a great day and you don't want to lose that happy go lucky feeling.
Tell me...is your home helping you achieve your needs?
Welcome to Reason #1.
Studies by the University of Sydney found that decorating reaches deep into the core of our very cerebral being and influences us at a deep subconscious level, and the University of Texas found that color plays an important role in our emotions.
Choosing a color to decorate with can be as simple as which color draws your eye and makes you feel good.
In their study they reported that colors like grey, beige and white were linked to depression in women and that colors like pink, green and blue can increase your feelings of calm and happiness.
Choose colors that you love...it doesn't matter if it's the "in" color of the moment or not, you're going to live inside this palette longer than the current color will be around, so pick what you will love long term.
By using suitable and beautiful shades in your space, you can create a visual harmony and happier mood...and who doesn't need more good vibes?
Do People Know Who You Are?
Friends and family...your home can talk to them
It's common to have people to your home...friends, family, and even clients will visit your house and the spaces that inhabit it. When they enter your door do they know who you are? (and knowing you name or what you do for a living doesn't count). Does your home speak to the love of the Orient you developed after a vacation there? Will your home tell them that you are a flower aficionado with an extensive knowledge of their names? If the answers to these questions isn't a resounding yes...then it's time to redecorate.
When you first moved into your home (and that means apartment, house, RV, or any other place you call your living space) you weren't the person you are now. Our tastes change, we grow and develop new interests. So that shag green carpet may just not be you anymore (our moms ALL had that carpet) and that means your home isn't truly telling others who you are.
When people can get a feel for you through your decor, we call that non-verbal communication, and that is some powerful stuff. The right decor can lift your image, but more importantly make those in your personal space feel more comfortable. That's a good thing right?
Getting more done with less effort wasted is always a bonus
Have you ever noticed that you plan for most of the things you do within your day? You plan the route that is most efficient to get errands done, you plan the time out for getting things done on a daily basis, but have you ever stopped and asked if your home was a hindrance to your productivity?
Most of us never ask that question however; a good interior design does. A well designed home allows for not just energy efficiency (think drapes helping keeping the room cool on a hot day), it also makes your day easier and more convenient which creates less waste of your time (and time is a commodity).
If you are asking yourself "where is all my free time going" maybe it's time to ask "should I redecorate".
Everyone Has Needs
Have you had a life changing event? Maybe you just got married, had a baby, or moved into your first home. Decorating keeps in mind the needs of the inhabitants of the space.
For example, newly weds might like a style that has a private and romantic feel; while new parents may need more organization, and an artist may want a space that fuels their creativity. Properly designed spaces address these needs and uses all available space to your advantage.
Your space should be designed to accommodate the specifics of your life and not sacrifice you only to style. Good designs create a LIVABLE and USEABLE area that takes your daily lifestyle into account (you do want to be pampered in your own home right?)
Are You In Love?
We don't mean with another person...we mean with your living space.
You moved into your home for a reason, right? You loved it. From the moment you walked over the threshold you could imagine your life there. Maybe it was the high ceilings, the kitchen space, or the wonderful light pouring in from the windows. Whatever the reason was, do you still feel the same? Decorating (and redecorating) rekindles that original spark and makes your love reignite.
When you stare at the same decor, the same colors, and the same thing day after day it can affect your mood (remember reason #1?) If you aren't feeling the love...it's time to update.
So there you have it...5 great reasons to decorate...or redecorate your space. We'd love to hear what you think, so hit that comment button and tell us what's on your mind!
As always we are here to help you define your style, be more efficient, and help you fall in love again (after all you can never have too much love). Until we blog again...
Have a Stylin' day!
