These words matter
At this point I'm pretty sure that these weren't the 5 little words you were expecting to see, but trust me they are pretty important words nonetheless.
In the world of interior design there are little "add ons" that are important to the overall design. After all you wouldn't order a banana split without the toppings, sprinkles, or the banana...all you would have is ice cream. (I'm not knocking ice cream, but I know I love all the gooey good stuff that goes with it). Well in interior design the flowers, fabric, details, pillows and creativity combine to create all the wonderful goodness that makes up a whole design. So let's take a quick look at each of these words individually.
The importance of flowers in a design should never be overlooked. Flowers are a simple and subtle way to make a statement as well as add charm and warmth to a room. Flowers cheerfully infuse a room with color and a vitality that creates a connection to your space. Flower power can bring an energy of positivity and a feeling of being one with nature since you are bringing a piece of the outside into the house. (I always say you can't have enough good vibes).
No matter your taste in style, there are always floral arrangements that can be made to accommodate your space. From fresh flowers that will add aroma to artificial flowers that make caring for them easy...no one should design without the joy these blooming beauties add.
Textiles play an important role to create mood and set the tone for a space based on a client's needs and the space's intended purpose. Choices about what type of textures, colors, and patterns to use are important in creating the desired effect. Without fabric the space would probably feel less finished. The type of fabric you should use is dependant and important to the type of space being decorated. If your room receives a lot of direct sun, you might need fabrics that are fade resistant, while a home with small children will need a durable fabric that can take more wear.
Since no two houses are the same, fabrics play an essential role in creating a 'home" that responds to the need of the occupants (and we come full circle once again to our 5 reasons to decorate/redecorate blog.). Fabrics create a comfort that helps make the space feel liveable and also adds a layer of self expression.
When designing or decorating it is important to pay attention to the small details because it is often the smallest details that make the biggest difference between a bright and exciting space or a boring one. If you look around your room and feel like something is just missing, then chances are you need to look at adding more details.
Small details can refer to things like the size of a fabric pattern, the fringe finish on a valance, or it can be the lack of feeling to a space. A good design takes into account a multitude of little and big details (this is where a professional designer can really step in and help) that define your style and reflect you at every turn. Decorating is after all a statement of who you are reflected within your home.
Details should never be obvious, but should enhance the overall feel of your space.
Furniture is something of a blank slate. Pillows are the simple to use items that can bring them to life.
Pillows are an east way to also add rhythm to the room, by tying the individual elements together. They add a little subtle hint of polish to the room and can also add that bit of extra comfort you need.
Pillows come in all shapes, colors, and textures plus there are indoor and outdoor varieties to choose from. They are extremely versatile and can even be used as a simple pinpoint focus of color, but if carefully placed it can be an effective tool of design (plus who doesn't love a plump pillow to lay against?)
When choosing pillows keep the size of the item it will sit on in mind, if that space will get direct sun, or excessive wear. Taking into account the overall room will help you choose wisely.
Being creative in any aspect of life has its importance, but even more so in design. Creativity is the breath that gives life to style. Style then affects your creativity and behavior. It's a circle you live within everyday.
Interior design focuses around the visually appealing while also being effective and practical. A good design has many pieces that fit like a puzzle in order to create the finished style.
Let's refer back to our blog on 5 reasons to decorate (that blog was pretty important huh?). We talked about a space being functional and accommodating the needs of the occupants. Well one of those needs is fulfilling the emotional and mental needs of those using the area. Creativity within a design allows for the type of activities and mental stimulation used in the space as well. It can also provide for elements that will fulfill a given need within a space. An example of this is having the right desk to work at in a room, but the room itself may not be designed solely for working.
Our well being is easily influenced by our surroundings and the space we live within is a big factor. Creativity allows the use of great design, but also knows how to use and apply the four other little words we have talked about in this blog.
As always, drop us a comment and tell us your thoughts.
Until next blog...
